Chá Gorreana, on the north coast of São Miguel in the Azores. The only commercially active tea factory in Europe. Founded 1883. Same machines, same process, same family.
How tea ends up in the Azores
Phylloxera destroyed the Azorean wine industry in the 1860s. The Mota Borges family imported two tea experts from Macau and planted Camellia sinensis. The volcanic soil, the rain pattern (300 days a year), and the absence of pests gave perfect conditions.
The factory tour
Free, daily 9 AM – 5 PM. Photographs allowed everywhere. The 1883 machinery is the star — iron drying trays heated by coal, withering racks, the original rolling drum. The smell is overwhelming: oxidized green leaves and warm metal.
What to buy
- Encosta de Bruma (mid-grade green) — 8 euros for 100g. Best value.
- Orange Pekoe (the iconic black) — 10 euros. Drinking it in Lisbon makes you feel proper.
- Pico tea (high-grade green) — 14 euros. The one to bring home.
Combine with
Chá Gorreana is on the north coast. Easy to combine with: Furnas (geothermal valley, 25 min south), Lagoa do Fogo (volcanic crater lake, 20 min west), Ribeira Grande (the closest town, 10 min — good lunch at Tony’s).
