About

I am Ander Bilbao Castejón, a documentary travel photographer born in Bilbao (Basque Country) in 1991. Behind every post on Bidaiatzen there’s a trip I have actually taken and a camera I know intimately. No stock, no AI-generated images, no shortcuts.

What I shoot

I have photographed 29+ countries between 2010 and 2026 — from Patagonia to Uzbekistan, with stops in Tanzania, Cambodia and northern Finland. The work I am most invested in:

  • Documentary travel photography: places, daily rituals, how light shifts at 5 AM in spots almost nobody has photographed.
  • Wildlife photography: photo safaris, coastal scenes, rural falconry.
  • Night and astrophotography: Milky Way over the Serengeti, auroras in Iceland, Atlas Mountains skies.
  • Editorial and cultural portraiture: people, clothes, gestures — no forced poses.

How I work

Every Bidaiatzen article follows one rule: I travel, I shoot, then I write what I saw. If I haven’t been there, I don’t write about it. If I don’t own a photo of the place, the place doesn’t make it in. Images are processed in Lightroom + Capture One; never with AI-generated elements.

My work is distributed via stock photography on 500px, Adobe Stock, and Behance (see sameAs on my profile for links) and licensed in travel publications.

Why Bidaiatzen

Bidaiatzen means “traveling” in Basque. It started in 2026 as a personal exercise — documenting the route before it disappears — and grew into an editorial platform that connects three things:

  1. The blog post (this one).
  2. Exportable Discovery (every post can be sent to WhatsApp as a travel plan, no sign-up needed).
  3. WanderPass — the app that extends all of this as a digital passport.

Gear I use

Full breakdown at My travel photography gear. Fujifilm + Canon bodies, prime optics for cultural portraiture, Peak Design backpack, Three Legged Thing tripod, DJI Mini drone for selective aerial work.

Education

University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Self-taught photographer since 2010. Specialised coursework in Tales of Light (landscape processing) and The Photo Cookbook (editorial composition).
