Phylloxera destroyed the Azorean wine industry in the 1860s. The Mota Borges family imported two tea experts from Macau and planted Camellia sinensis. The volcanic soil, the rain pattern (300 days a year), and the absence of pests gave perfect conditions.

Free, daily 9 AM - 5 PM. Photographs allowed everywhere. The 1883 machinery is the star — iron drying trays heated by coal, withering racks, the original rolling drum. The smell is overwhelming: oxidized green leaves and warm metal.
