Three madrasahs around one courtyard. The tile work is best seen at dawn (5:50 AM in October) when the sun rises behind Tilya-Kori and the courtyard fills with one single bar of light. Climb the minaret of Ulugh Beg for the panoramic that no postcard captures correctly.

The whole old town is enclosed in mud-brick walls and feels like a film set. The Islom Hoja minaret is climbable for sunrise — narrow, steep, not for claustrophobics.

After the 1966 earthquake the city was rebuilt by Soviet architects. The metro stations are basically galleries of socialist realism. Photography rules changed in 2018: now it's allowed, except in stations near government buildings.
